If you are obese, don't feel bad about it. It may not be your fault.   A study suggests that you may carry a gene called FTO that is responsible for your obesity.

The 15-year study of 40,000 adults and children led by geneticists from Oxford University and the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter found that the gene in one in six Britons increases the risk of becoming dangerously overweight by 70 percent and the risk for developing diabetes by a half.

The risk would be smaller in people who carry one gene instead of one pair of genes.  The study shows people who carry one gene may have a 30 percent increased risk of obesity and a 25 percent increased risk of diabetes.

Experts say that just because you have such a gene does not mean that you have to be obese.    A gene can be suppressed or activated by the foods you eat, so the lifestyle including diet is still most important.   Without excessive intake of calories, you can¡¯t gain excessive weight. After all, you can¡¯t control your genetics, but you can control your diet and lifestyle.
