Saturaday August 4 2007 (Foodconsumer.org) - The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning Friday to advise consumers not to eat certain brands of French Cut Green beans in 14.5 ounce cans manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc based in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
The beans of concern may be undercooked and some cans may have some leaks, which would increase odds of contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produce a neurotoxin causing botulism.
As of August 1, 2007, the FDA has not received reports of illness associated with consumption of the affected green beans, t he agency said in its statement.
Lakeside Foods August 1 issued a voluntary recall of 15,000 cases of 14.5-ounce French Style Green Beans with the following in the top line of can codes: EAA5247, EAA5257, EAA5267, EAA5277, EAB5247, EAB5257, ECA5207, ECA5217, ECA5227, ECA5297, ECB5207, ECB5217, ECB5227 and ECB5307.

Botulism is a life-threatening food poisoning. Symptoms may show up six hours to two weeks after ingestion of botulism toxin, according to the FDA.
The symptoms include double vision, blurred vision, dropping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. Victims can be paralyzed or even die from the illness. People who have these symptoms and who may have eaten the recalled product are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
Consumers are encouraged to call the company at 1-800 466-3834 ext. 4090 if they have any questions or concerns about the recall.
